General Washington likely met with his generals and entertained important visitors in this room. Visitors included committee members of Congress sent to observe the condition of the Army, foreign ambassadors, foreign officers, local mayors, and prominent local inhabitants.
A Chippendale style drop-leaf table similar to this one served as a conference table where Washington would discuss military issues and devise battle strategies with his generals. The drop-leaf was a popular design, as it could be extended for company and folded away when not in use. See the table in use in the image below.
